Having lived the first 22 years of my life in...Ed,

Having lived the first 22 years of my life in Alabama and been entirely educated in public schools there, the notion that public school teachers in the Yellowhammer State have only the AEA's heavy arm in Alabama politics as their "avenue of influence over their workplaces" is thoroughly laughable. That's a statement which could only be written by somebody with no experience whatsoever inside the state in question. The AEA is a pervasive power from the smallest first-grade classroom all the way up to the statehouse.

But thanks for the comment. Will Collierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15125312209711458722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7870530298450082582.post-92222008036610813572010-06-03T15:59:23.589-04:002010-06-03T15:59:23.589-04:00Oh, and we *all* know that elected state officials...Oh, and we *all* know that elected state officials have next to no influence on the workplaces of teachers.

Okay, pull the other one.

If you and Drum actually believe that you're both even dumber than I thought. I originally thought it was the ideological beer glasses that were warping your view, but now I'm not so sure.JorgXMcKiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07509568525555189690noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7870530298450082582.post-78453974998751106462010-06-03T15:55:19.560-04:002010-06-03T15:55:19.560-04:00@Ed Kilgore: Why of course!!! In Alabama, as in most other southern states, teachers do not have collective bargaining rights. That's what makes their unions "weak" (and barely unions at all in any traditional sense of the word). And in fact, that's partially why they are so active politically, since it's their only avenue of influence over their workplaces.

Ed Kilgorenewdonkeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09054316935370553151noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7870530298450082582.post-17447930944365172142010-06-03T13:05:14.622-04:002010-06-03T13:05:14.622-04:00Been saying it for years now but Kevin Drum is jus...Been saying it for years now but Kevin Drum is just not nearly as smart as he'd like to think...Paul Hoguehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10810583968278593492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7870530298450082582.post-89341191123571921312010-06-03T10:32:24.192-04:002010-06-03T10:32:24.192-04:00Time to report Kevin Drum to the FTC, eh?Time to report Kevin Drum to the FTC, eh?Micha Elyihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13342792492539185940noreply@blogger.com
